The natural fiber activewear movement is onto something, but it doesn't go far enough. Cotton, Tencel, hemp and bamboo get heavy when you sweat, lose their shape by the second set, and don't sculpt the way synthetics do. Traditional synthetic activewear has the opposite problem: it's petroleum based, which means plastic can seep straight into your skin every time you work out.
CELLA closes that gap. Our fabric sculpts, lifts, and wicks sweat like the synthetics you're used to, but it's derived from castor beans and corn instead of petroleum. It's OEKO-TEX® certified clean and woven from luxurious Italian yarn with a buttery-soft feel, the same caliber fabric luxury fashion houses source their pieces from.

Every "clean" activewear brand makes you choose between non-toxic and actually good to work out in. We didn't want that trade-off. Natural fibers like cotton, Tencel, and bamboo are non-toxic, but they get heavy the moment you sweat, lose their shape fast, and don't hold you in the way real activewear should. Our fabric does what those can't: it sculpts, holds its shape, and wicks sweat like true performance fabric, because it's built from a plant-based version of the same stretch fibers used in synthetic activewear (see 87% Plant-Based below), not from cotton or bamboo. Same fit and support as your favorite synthetic set, none of the petroleum, microplastics, or chemicals.

Most activewear is harmful to your skin and the environment, especially the moment you start sweating in it. Ours isn't. The spandex, nylon, and polyester in most stretch fabric starts as petroleum, the same raw material as gasoline and plastic bottles. CELLA's fabric blends EVO® by Fulgar, a bio-based nylon made primarily from castor oil and a corn-derived component, with bio-derived LYCRA® EcoMade, a plant-based elastane. 87% of what's touching your skin came from a plant, not a refinery.

This fabric has been independently proven safe against your skin, not just marketed that way. OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is one of the most widely recognized independent safety certifications in textiles. It means the finished fabric, not just the yarn, has been tested against more than 1,000 regulated and unregulated substances, from azo dyes to heavy metals to PFAS. For something that sits against your skin through an entire workout, that's the difference between a fabric that just feels clean and one a third party has actually proven to be.

BPA is a hormone-disrupting chemical with no reason to be anywhere near your skin, and it's not in our fabric. It's been used since the 1950s to make hard plastics, and it's what's called an endocrine disruptor, meaning it can interfere with your body's natural hormones and has been linked to fertility and developmental problems.
PFAS, the "forever chemicals" that build up in your body and never leave, aren't in our fabric either. They're built with bonds so strong they never break down, in nature or in you, and they're often used to make fabric water or stain-resistant.

Phthalates are hormone-disrupting chemicals banned in children's toys, and they're not hiding in our fabric. They're used to make plastic soft and bendable, and like BPA, they're endocrine disruptors that can throw off your hormones. In clothing they usually turn up in plastic-based prints, like a glossy logo decal, a common shortcut in cheap activewear.
Formaldehyde is a known irritant and carcinogen commonly used to keep fabric from wrinkling, and ours skips it. It can bother your eyes, nose, and throat, trigger asthma, and health agencies classify it as a substance known to cause cancer, mainly from breathing it in factory settings, not from wearing a shirt. Its everyday irritation and asthma risk are reason enough to leave it out.

This fabric isn't just made in Italy, the yarn is developed there, inside one of the most tightly regulated textile manufacturing environments in the world. Fabric produced in the EU falls under REACH, the regulation that restricts many of the exact substances called out on this page (formaldehyde, phthalates, certain dyes) more strictly than most other markets require. That's a second layer of oversight behind everything else here.
It's also why Italian textiles carry the reputation they do. Italy's mills, many of them generations old, are where luxury fashion houses have sourced fabric for decades, prized for a level of precision and quality control that mass-market manufacturing doesn't match. Developing our fabric there isn't a marketing flourish, it's a regulatory safeguard and a quality standard.
